Mobile Games? Is this the route you want to take?

iphoneThere are so many different forms of gaming out there today.  From consoles, to PC to cell phones.  So how do you choose the job in gaming that is right for you?  Obviously you would go with something you love to do.  If you’re into the XBox 360 then you would apply for jobs with companies that publish games for that console.  BUT here is the thing.  What if a certain segment of the gaming field is doing better than another?

The Perfect Place for Women Gamers

I know it’s not easy being a woman gamer.  At least that is what I hear 🙂  We all know that many of the games distributed today by developers are geared towards men.  Hopefully companies will start to realize what they can do to expand their horizons and make games that appeal to women and men.

In the meantime, if you’re a woman you do have options.  One really cool site out there specifically geared towards women is

PlayTest for Microsoft

So how many of you out there today are having problems finding a game testing job because EXPERIENCE is required?  I’m sure right now you’re reading this and thinking “hey that’s me!”.  Well I’ve got great news for you.  There is a way to get the experience you so desperately need without going through a big long hiring process.  I mean I know I’ve seen job upon job upon job posted that says “Entry Level” and then you read the posting and they want someone with at least 1 year of experience.  Total bummer right?  Wrong…

Game Testing School?

Can you take a course or attend a school that will teach you how to test a video game?  Well yes and no.  Actually once at Digipen I saw a course they were offering to show students interested in game design what game testing was all about.  But it wasn’t meant to walk you thru step by step how to test.  So that is the “yes” part of the answer.  The “no” part…there are no courses out there offered on a regular basis that gamers can take to get the knowledge of what it entails to test a game.  There are no schools you can attend that teach you how to test a video game.  That’s probably not what you wanted to hear, but it is the truth.

Gamasutra-One Stop Job Shop

There are many game job sites out there.  I mean you can search on the major job boards like Monster or you can search on a specific game job board such as Gamasutra.

Gamasutra happens to be my favorite job site out there today.  Not only can you search the most recent job postings, you can also get the hottest game news.

Over 85 employers currently post their game jobs on Gamasutra.  Employers such as Rockstar, 2K Sports, and Midway Games just to name a few.  Now they don’t have every single game job posted on their site, but it’s one of the top job boards for gaming that I know of today.

Nintendo Can Smile in Spite of Tough Economic Times

I have felt since I was made aware of the crisis around us, that there would be game companies who would continue to do well.  Well Nintendo is one of those companies.  They recently released information regarding sales of their Wii and DS units as well as game sales for those units.  And the outcome…..drumroll please….Massive Success.

So let’s put this in perspective.  They posted data for the Wii which showed that in a 10 month span in 2007 they sold over 46 million Wii units.  Then they posted the same 10 month period for 2008 where they sold over a whopping 90 million units.

PopCap Games Available on PlayStation Network

Is it just me or is EVERYONE talking about this.  Why is that?  I think the reason is that so many people love to play puzzle games.  I mean I just went to see what all the fuss was about and I ended up played Bejeweled 2 for about 30 minutes, and trust me I’m not a puzzle kind of gamer.  I even got into Big Money for a while.  They are addicting games.

Anyway, now PopCap games is brining their fun to a playstation near you.

South Carolina Equals Game Studios

So do you think that if you live in South Carolina you have no options as a game tester?  Well think again.

You have several options to choose from and in continuing with my ongoing reports on game studios all over the US, here are my top selections for South Carolina:

Void Star Creations

Founded in 2006 they are currently in production of Poker Smash.  You can visit the Poker Smash site here.

The company is run by two very young guys and I’m sure they’ll have a lot to offer us in the coming years.

From Game Tester to Game Designer?

So is it possible to go from being just a lowly game tester to a person who actually is capable of designing games?  Absolutely!

If you have the passion and drive to succeed you can do anything you want.  So many designers these days are self taught.  You get your foot in the door with a game testing job and then you learn all you possibly can.  Perhaps after your testing gig is over, you apply for an internship in game design at the same company.  Or you do your research, purchase the software needed and start playing around.

Game Testers & Glitches

The whole reason behind game testers is so that a developer/publisher can make sure their game is going to be distributed error free.  Does this always happen?  No.  Just check out this video:

You saw it, games like Bioshock, Assassin’s Creed, Call of Duty 4, and Halo 3 all released with major embarrassing glitches.

Companies spend millions of dollars and a ton of time to bring about a new video game.  Can you imagine the repercussions when the game has so many glitches gamers won’t play it?  Won’t buy it?  Will go online and rip it apart?  The consequences are tremendous.
