Modern Warfare 2 Breaking Records

COD Modern 2I knew it, I can say that again and again and again.  I had no doubts this game was going to break records.

If you haven’t played it yet, you better go get yourself a copy.

Activision reported in it’s 1st day of sales the game has sold over $310 million.  Yes that is three hundred and ten million dollars!  On it’s first day!!!  This makes it the biggest launch in history.  And this is just for the US and UK, nevermind global sales.

More Company Layoffs, Closings

layoffsWe all know the economy has taking a turn for the worst over the last year.  So it’s not surprise that more companies have shut down and laid off employees.

The most recent headlines…

Idol Minds the developer behind the down loadable PS3 game “Pain” recently cut half of it’s staff members.  Inside information states the reason for this lay off was due to “Sony budget cuts”.  It’s sad since Idol Minds has been in business for 11 years and their game “Pain” was the most downloaded PSN game as of January 2009.  It’s really so sad to hear.

Halo 3: ODST

Halo 3Please, please, please tell me you’ve had a chance to check out the latest in the Halo series?  If not, you have no idea what you’re missing!

In this version, you are no longer the Master Chief, you’re just a UNSC soldier known as a ODST (Orbital Drop Shock Trooper) and you’re missing is exploring the ruins on Mombasa to find your missing teammates.  Not an easy task at all of course, but WAY fun.

Sales (as I expected) are soaring on this one.  You can’t miss all of the exciting multi-player action.

Now Is The Time To Buy a Console!

consolesIf you don’t already have a PS3 or XBox 360 Pro or Elite now is the time to buy one!

Target recently advertised the reductions for the XBox 360 lines.  With the Pro coming in at $250 and the Elite coming in at $299.  Many of you have probably already heard that Sony cut the PS3 by $100.

Although Microsoft hasn’t officially announced  this price cut Engaget.com has pics confirming the actual ads showing these price cuts.  You can check them out here.

Mobile Games? Is this the route you want to take?

iphoneThere are so many different forms of gaming out there today.  From consoles, to PC to cell phones.  So how do you choose the job in gaming that is right for you?  Obviously you would go with something you love to do.  If you’re into the XBox 360 then you would apply for jobs with companies that publish games for that console.  BUT here is the thing.  What if a certain segment of the gaming field is doing better than another?

Modern Warfare 2

modernwarfareAre you as excited about this release as I am?  I love the COD series.  Scheduled for release on November 10th, I just cannot seem to wait for this one.  Modern Warfare 2 will be released for PS3, XBox 360 and the PC.

With 15 possible killstreak rewards, the multiplayer version is going to kick some serious ass.  One includes the ability to pull out your laptop and direct an AC130’s attack on your opponents.  There are also rewards for breaking an opponents kill streak.

Rumor has it that the special edition which includes night vision goggles may also have a specially made controller only to be used for this game.

Best Places to Live If You Want to Test Games

placestoliveNow there are gaming companies in just about every state in the US and of course internationally.  But obviously there are a few states that have greater concentrations of companies than other.

So what exactly are the best places in the country to live if you want to work for a gaming company?  There are quite a few.

Let’s start with the East Coast.  Obviously many gamers know there are a ton of companies on the East Coast.

Massachusetts is a hot gaming mecca right now.  There are over 35 game developers & publishers in that area.  Definitely a great choice.

GameJobs.com, a Great Source for Gaming Jobs

gamejobsI love to share the little secrets that people would love to hear regarding finding a great game job.  This is just one more source for great information on the gaming job scene.

GameJobs.com is is site that was established back in February of 2008.  There are so many things you can do on this site including:
Searching jobs
Posting your resume
Looking for schools

I have found it to be a very helpful site and they seem to get a decent amount of postings to their site.

Obviously employers are also granted access to post jobs and view resumes.

Facebook Gaming

vampire-warsAs a hard core gamer, I have found myself caught up at times in the world of social gaming.  Perfect examples are games like Mafia Wars, Vampire Wars, Dragon Wars (do I detect a pattern here?).  All of which are available on Facebook (amongst other social networking sites).

I can access my FB account and play these games for hours.  Only problem, you’re limited to how much you can do at any given time.  To play most of these games you need energy, money etc.  All of which takes actual time to increase.

Game Testing School?

Can you take a course or attend a school that will teach you how to test a video game?  Well yes and no.  Actually once at Digipen I saw a course they were offering to show students interested in game design what game testing was all about.  But it wasn’t meant to walk you thru step by step how to test.  So that is the “yes” part of the answer.  The “no” part…there are no courses out there offered on a regular basis that gamers can take to get the knowledge of what it entails to test a game.  There are no schools you can attend that teach you how to test a video game.  That’s probably not what you wanted to hear, but it is the truth.
