More Company Layoffs, Closings

layoffsWe all know the economy has taking a turn for the worst over the last year.  So it’s not surprise that more companies have shut down and laid off employees.

The most recent headlines…

Idol Minds the developer behind the down loadable PS3 game “Pain” recently cut half of it’s staff members.  Inside information states the reason for this lay off was due to “Sony budget cuts”.  It’s sad since Idol Minds has been in business for 11 years and their game “Pain” was the most downloaded PSN game as of January 2009.  It’s really so sad to hear.

Temporary Staffing Agencies & Game Testing

I can tell you that over the years I have seen a large number of staffing agencies being hired by big gaming firms to find their game testers.

The way this works is you are employed by the staffing agency, not the gaming company.  That company pays the staffing agency for your time but never has to add you on to payroll, saving major expenses for them.

There are several that are well known for hiring game testers throughout the US.  The most frequently viewed staffing agencies are:

Is The Economy Effecting Gaming?

Of course it is.  This is bound to happen.  I mean everyone is being hit by this tough economy.

Recent word confirms that THQ has laid off 85% of it’s QA staff with Volition.  Luckily they gave their staff 60 days notice and they also promise to try to help them find new jobs either in another location or within the company.

THQ posted losses of over $191 million.  So it’s inevitable that lay offs are going to be done.

Gamasutra-One Stop Job Shop

There are many game job sites out there.  I mean you can search on the major job boards like Monster or you can search on a specific game job board such as Gamasutra.

Gamasutra happens to be my favorite job site out there today.  Not only can you search the most recent job postings, you can also get the hottest game news.

Over 85 employers currently post their game jobs on Gamasutra.  Employers such as Rockstar, 2K Sports, and Midway Games just to name a few.  Now they don’t have every single game job posted on their site, but it’s one of the top job boards for gaming that I know of today.
