Is Game Testing A Stepping Stone?
That is a common question and one that requires a good and honest answer. The simple answer, yes. But there is just more to it than that.
I have known of gamers who started out as a tester only to later become a programmer making really good money. BUT that is not typically what happens.
Most game testers test games with one company and then move on to test more games with another company, never once thinking of how to move up. This becomes their modus operandi.
It’s only the incredibly motivated and driven gamers that will seize the opportunity to learn as much as humanly possible about their surroundings and study the various softwares/hardwares that are being used.
If you want to use game testing as a stepping stone to something bigger and better, you can. You just really truly have to want it and you have to work for it. You’re not just going to walk into Activision and tell them “hey, I want to test your games, then I want to develop them!” Instead what you want to do is get in as a game tester, work hard. Show you are dedicated and willing and open to learning new things and hopefully someone will give you the opportunity to move on up.
