The Great State of CA
Back in 2005 there was a law in CA which was attempting to restrict the sale or rental of violent games to minors. There was a review of that law just done and again the court ruled against it.
Luckily there is such a thing called the First Amendment. The law was going to basically require anyone under the age of 18 to show ID if a game was said to be “offensive to the community” or “especially heinous, cruel or depraved”.
I think the biggest problem is who would decide what was offensive or depraved and how would that effect gamers of all ages. We all know what happens when you leave things up to the government. I mean how much money would be devoted to reviewing these games and giving them these ratings? Can the state of CA really afford this at a time when the budget is in total crisis? I mean it’s just typical politics if you ask me, which is why I don’t have anything good to say about it.
Let’s chalk this up to one for the gamers. We already have the ERSB rating system, I just don’t get what more they want to do to us! Luckily, the cooler heads have prevailed and we live to fight another day.
