Modern Warfare 2 Breaking Records

COD Modern 2I knew it, I can say that again and again and again.  I had no doubts this game was going to break records.

If you haven’t played it yet, you better go get yourself a copy.

Activision reported in it’s 1st day of sales the game has sold over $310 million.  Yes that is three hundred and ten million dollars!  On it’s first day!!!  This makes it the biggest launch in history.  And this is just for the US and UK, nevermind global sales.

More Company Layoffs, Closings

layoffsWe all know the economy has taking a turn for the worst over the last year.  So it’s not surprise that more companies have shut down and laid off employees.

The most recent headlines…

Idol Minds the developer behind the down loadable PS3 game “Pain” recently cut half of it’s staff members.  Inside information states the reason for this lay off was due to “Sony budget cuts”.  It’s sad since Idol Minds has been in business for 11 years and their game “Pain” was the most downloaded PSN game as of January 2009.  It’s really so sad to hear.

Target recently advertised the reductions for the XBox 360 lines.  With the Pro coming in at $250 and the Elite coming in at $299.  Many of you have probably already heard that Sony cut the PS3 by $100.

Although Microsoft hasn’t officially announced  this price cut has pics confirming the actual ads showing these price cuts.  You can check them out here.

Are There More Women Playing Games?

women-gamersSo are there more women playing video games?  Absolutely and a recent release of a study done by the NPD Marketing group confirms this.  Obviously this is something that all of us gamers already knew.  I mean get online and play COD4 and just listen to all the female players on the other end.  Now we all know many times they get chewed out and are treated like meat, but the reality of it is this.  More women are playing games and the trend grows larger and larger every year.

Facebook Gaming

vampire-warsAs a hard core gamer, I have found myself caught up at times in the world of social gaming.  Perfect examples are games like Mafia Wars, Vampire Wars, Dragon Wars (do I detect a pattern here?).  All of which are available on Facebook (amongst other social networking sites).

I can access my FB account and play these games for hours.  Only problem, you’re limited to how much you can do at any given time.  To play most of these games you need energy, money etc.  All of which takes actual time to increase.

Another Game Company Bites the Dust

gamelabGamelab just recently closed it’s NY office.  This is one of many companies that simply cannot make it through these tough economic times.  They have since sold all of their property including all of their office equipment.  Yet after all this, the company remains mum on the situation.

The company first mentioned plans for a Fall layoff last year which was the first inclination into their potential issues.

This falls on the tail of another developer 3D Realms who also had to shut their doors down.

It’s a scary sign of more bad news to come and more and more companies succumb to the ever flailing economic state.

Opinion Poll: What is your take on social games?

By social games I mean games you can play on social sites like Facebook and MySpace.  I’m sure you’ve played them at one point or another.  Look at the ever growing popularity of Mafia Wars on Facebook.

From one gamer to another, I would really like to hear your comments on how you feel about this kinds of games.

Do you enjoy them?

I know a social game is nothing even close to a standard video game but yet thousands upon thousands of people of all ages play these social games on a daily basis.

Fatal Frame IV:No Go In the US

If you are a Fatal Frame fan, then you are going to be really bummed about this news.  Nintendo will not release the most recent “Mask of the Lunar Eclipse” outside of Japan.

Many gamers had an opportunity to experience Fatal Frame on PS2 and the XBox back in 2002.  With this latest released originally slated for some time in 2009, Nintendo is now not stating the reason for their change of heart.

One can only speculate that there are some sort of issues with the developer Temco LTD.  But who really knows why these things happen.  It’s very strange because you would think that Nintendo would want to expand their opportunity to make more money, but like I said you never know!

Get Your PS2 for $99!

Yep you heard it right, the price is being slashed effective tomorrow (Wednesday April 1st, 2009).  Let’s just hope it’s not an April Fools Day joke!

Jack Tretton, President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America has been quoted as stating “Demand for PlayStation 2 remains strong throughout the world, and the new $99 price point will bring in new consumers who will discover how PlayStation platforms are an outstanding choice for their gaming and home entertainment needs.”

Is The Economy Effecting Gaming?

Of course it is.  This is bound to happen.  I mean everyone is being hit by this tough economy.

Recent word confirms that THQ has laid off 85% of it’s QA staff with Volition.  Luckily they gave their staff 60 days notice and they also promise to try to help them find new jobs either in another location or within the company.

THQ posted losses of over $191 million.  So it’s inevitable that lay offs are going to be done.
